I could live with this! Manual, Boxer engine, two doors, and AWD! for $3k exactly! I'd switch out the gold wheels too for steelies and snow tires and all would be alright! Yes it's an RS, but it's the last and only thing that fits my needs and since I know nothing about Subaru's, I'm okay with driving this in the off-season!

Dat Rust.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 12:32 |

Don't care! I'd take it either way, makes me feel less guilty about driving it in snow.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 12:34 |

yikes rust, and was never a fan of the DOHC in that year, reliability issues. Not that the SOCH 2.5 didnt have its own issues.
the rust would be a concern, if its that bad on the body whats the critical suspension parts like.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 12:34 |

Take a look-see under the car, that should be the true deciding factor.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 12:35 |

World Rally Blue AND gold wheels, man that's an awesome combo!
![]() 07/14/2014 at 12:35 |

So it has rust, questionable mechanical claims, and needs work? Tread carefully.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 12:35 |

I would have to do that yes.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 12:36 |

What's wrong with the DOHC?
![]() 07/14/2014 at 12:36 |

Talk him down on the rust, mileage, and tire condition.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 12:37 |

Why not just buy winter tires for the Focus?
![]() 07/14/2014 at 12:38 |
|
All of this fucking rust!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Keep gold wheels. But it is a good deal.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 12:38 |

I just can't find anything else that I'd want to drive in the winter. I thought BMW for awhile but then I reckoned it'd be stupid expensive to even think of that, and everyone's saying RWD is a nono and I'm thinking "how'd anyone survive the 70s and 80s?". There's just no real car I would want to drive in the winter for $3k. What would you get if you had to and didn't want a truck or SUV?
![]() 07/14/2014 at 12:39 |
|
3k? I know it's a 2.5RS, but still... I'd offer probably a third of that. If the wheel arches are that bad, the undercarriage is fucked.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 12:39 |

Why not drive the Focus? Get a summer weekend car instead?

What happened to a Taurus SHO?
That is horrifically rusty.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 12:42 |
|
Dammit! Why can't I just drive a damn Mustang in the snow?? People did it in the 60s and 70s and 80s and still do it now! It cannot possibly be that bad can it?
![]() 07/14/2014 at 12:42 |
|
I would grind it down and plastic dip over it with a dark blue. It is a beater after all.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 12:43 |
|
Every single SHO I find is just as rusty. They're all in shitty condition.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 12:44 |

lolwut
It seems as if buying the 944 is a bad decision. I would've just kept the Focus.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 12:45 |
|
Let me get this straight... you're selling a Focus ST to buy a 944 and a winter beater?
![]() 07/14/2014 at 12:45 |
|
Patience, it's only July. You've got some time before you need it.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 12:45 |
|
It isn't horrible but it is enough.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 12:45 |
|
It's not that bad; it's finding a damn winter car I would like that's near impossible.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 12:46 |
|
Ah, Subaru or Audi are you main options though. Be insanely careful with both, Audi has your standard German problems and Subaru's are notorious for eating head gaskets.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 12:47 |
|
Well at least you got off that Mustang idea. That was stupid.
I wouldn't get this 2.5RS because I definitely would never spend $3000 on any vehicle with that much rust on it.
Why haven't you looked at older Jeeps? Last November I got a rust-free '99 Grand Cherokee Limited V8 for $4200. I'm sure you could find something decent for less than that.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 12:47 |
|
Why not just get winter tires for the 944? You'll save space and money.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 12:48 |
|
Do you want it to be actually good in the snow? At minimum you'd need snow tires. I did that with a Miata when it was my only car. But for a car specifically for the winter, I wouldn't go that route.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 12:49 |
|
I was already getting the 944. My dad is trading in his car and I'm selling my mom's current car to get her a new VolvoI'm possibly a Focus ST to get my dad a new car and myself an winter car
![]() 07/14/2014 at 12:50 |

I just want all my ducks in a row as soon as possible is all.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 12:50 |

Ok
![]() 07/14/2014 at 12:51 |
|
What would you recommend other than those two?
![]() 07/14/2014 at 12:52 |
|
Just grind it down to bare metal and plastic dip over it.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 12:53 |
|
Because I'd rather have a car. -_-
![]() 07/14/2014 at 12:54 |

I just don't wanna be the first person in it's life to winter drive it...-_-
118k miles and no snow is rather impressive.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 12:54 |
|
What would you suggest?
![]() 07/14/2014 at 12:56 |
|
I'd hold out a little longer. You might be able to find a cleaner Impreza or Taurus.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 12:56 |
|
A lot more people also died in car crashes in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Considering how nasty this winter was, I'm kind of surprised you're still entertaining the Mustang Icescapades notion. At best, it'll be a pain just digging the thing out every morning.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 12:57 |
|
With your requirements I'm not sure there are any others to be honest
![]() 07/14/2014 at 12:59 |

I'm stubborn as hell, why do you think I'm still buying that 944? :P
Kidding aside. I just want a manual 6-cylinder something.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 12:59 |
|
What else is out there including those two?
![]() 07/14/2014 at 13:00 |

Okay, is there anything with a 6-cylinder in coupe or sedan form that has a manual and any drivetrain?
![]() 07/14/2014 at 13:02 |
|
Maybe I should keep looking.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 13:03 |

Manual XJ, boom :P
RWD, 4WD, winter-capable, dirt cheap, parts are cheap and plentiful, the 4.0L will outlast nuclear winter.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 13:06 |
|
Just get studded tires, who cares if they aren't street legal. You need them.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 13:07 |

I just thought of something. Have you looked at the Ford Contour SVT?
![]() 07/14/2014 at 13:07 |

There's always the Subaru Legacy or Outback.

No? Looks decent. Never thought of it before. Any problems with those?
![]() 07/14/2014 at 13:10 |

Do yourself a favor and find a more reliable Subaru. For $3k you should be able to do much better than that. Heck you can probably find a junky SUV for $500 or $1000 and when it dies buy another. Maybe you can even find an older AWD Volvo.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 13:10 |
|
I don't think it'd work.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 13:11 |

I5 Volvo?
![]() 07/14/2014 at 13:12 |

How do you find these cars?? I can't seem to find anything decent on CL.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 13:12 |

Here's a better option for you, if you feel like doing the work. And can get his price down a bit, which shouldn't be THAT difficult.

![]() 07/14/2014 at 13:12 |

Sorry, I dont know a lot about them. They all have manuals and V6's though. I'm sure someone around here owned one at some point.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 13:12 |

Boxer-6 Legacy..Mmmmm
![]() 07/14/2014 at 13:13 |

I been trolling CL since I was like 15. You figure out how to find good stuff after a while
![]() 07/14/2014 at 13:16 |

Well, sounds like the Legacy is an option then.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 13:16 |

People drive C4s during winter on blizzaks, ye of little faith.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 13:16 |

Or a Mustang that you were so determined on before. Even comes with a set of winter wheels and tires.

Could you find a manual Taurus SHO?
![]() 07/14/2014 at 13:18 |

![]() 07/14/2014 at 13:19 |

Which gen?
![]() 07/14/2014 at 13:19 |

It's not like you're gonna keep it forever. I'd only care about the weather if I was going to keep the car for the rest of my life.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 13:20 |

So if people drive C4s in the winter, I could drive a Mustang then?
![]() 07/14/2014 at 13:21 |

If the right one is found, maybe.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 13:21 |

2nd gen.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 13:22 |

Yeah. Live rear axle will make it fun, too.

I know this is west side of the state but find another as good as this.

![]() 07/14/2014 at 13:38 |

Why not?
![]() 07/14/2014 at 13:38 |
|
I can sense some sarcasm here. I don't see a problem with live axle for simple daily driving? I need more info.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 13:40 |
|
I mean I don't mind going to the west side to find a car at all(not yet at least), It's not a manual but it probably is the nicest SHO around. It's bookmarked.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 13:41 |
|
From the looks of it you may be a year or two late on the second gen SHO's. The rest of them out there seem to be basket cases.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 13:43 |
|
No idea. Don't know anything about Volvo's in that price range just that they exist. I got a new car in 2012 and was shopping used in the $13,000 range for AWD so Volvo hit my radar. Ended up deciding on a new Subaru due to a significant difference in gas milage when they went to the wimpy CVT
![]() 07/14/2014 at 13:50 |
|
Damn...Anything else left? VW? Maybe a Focus SVT.. -_-
![]() 07/14/2014 at 13:50 |
|
Not during normal DD, but I'd imagine it makes it easy to rotate on snow.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 13:51 |
|
Focus SVT will be out of your price range most likely. VW is a 50/50 shot for a nightmare. What do you not like about the Contour?
![]() 07/14/2014 at 13:51 |
|
There is a 95 XJ with 120k mi on a 4.0L with 5spd trans on sale for $2000 in the Michigan XJ Selling Post facebook group right meow.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 13:52 |
|
Maybe.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 13:55 |
|
It's not that I don't like it. It looks nice and clean. I just want to establish every single option I've got before I choose. If I can't have a Mustang or RWD car as a winter car, it's gotta be something else that's been thoroughly thought out.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 13:56 |
|
I see. Well I'm not yet ready to go out and buy one just yet. I'm just testing the waters so to speak. I want to plan ahead. Very far ahead.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 13:59 |
|
Looking into it. The Focus SVT will be in your price range at a minimum of 160k miles. So, a lot of wear parts will probably be getting ready to die.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 14:03 |
|
Ok, cool. What do you think about a BMW?
![]() 07/14/2014 at 14:05 |
|
They are all RWD.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 14:10 |
|
Yeah, I just can't let them go. Howabout a Ford Probe V6? Or a Firebird? It can't be that impossible to live with.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 14:12 |
|
Do what you want. Your too picky. At this rate you won't sell the Focus and won't have a beater.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 14:14 |
|
Let me tell ya, I've always been a "I would rather have a car" person. But I think that changes somewhat when you're talking about something for winter. I've always had smaller, sportier cars. Aside from my Jeep, which is my winter car, the biggest car I've ever owned was a Mazdaspeed 6.
I've got my 135is to drive the rest of the year. But in the winter, I love my Jeep.
A Grand Cherokee is obviously no sports car. It's mostly like driving a couch. But there's something fun about the feeling of being able to drive over crap, and it's great in the winter. With all-season truck tires, it's overall way better in the snow than my old MS6 with Blizzaks was—except for braking. Really the biggest advantage snow tires give you is under braking. Which is important, but I've learned to compensate.
There are other benefits to having the Jeep around. Like for when I need a back seat, or to carry around large items, or when I go on a road trip with my gf and she insists on bringing more crap along than will fit in either my 135is or her Civic.
If you'd rather have something smaller, well, a regular Cherokee is pretty small actually. Either way, take your time finding a good one, since they're older and not all will be trouble free. I lucked out with mine in that while it's not perfect, there's no major issues. Which for a 15 year old vehicle that I put under 5k miles a year on, is totally fine.
At the very least I'd go check out some Jeeps. If you don't like them, then fine. But you might be pleasantly surprised.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 14:14 |
|
I've heard nightmare stories about the Probes reliability. I heard the later ones were better but finding a clean late one will be tough on top of the questions that already exist.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 14:19 |
|
Partial devil's advocate here...
Why are you so dead set against a truck/SUV? Honestly for the winter, if you ever regularly get any serious (6"+) storms you will really appreciate the ground clearance.
I was a dead set hatchback fan for 15 years but bought a Jeep Cherokee because I couldn't take the hills and regular bad winters we were getting anymore. I have never owned a truck (except a beater Grand Wagoneer in college) before but now I am a fully committed Jeep person. Never thought I would be but.... it happens.
TL:DR - Don't knock it till you try it.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 14:31 |
|
I just don't want one. It's like getting a shot from a doctor; I just don't want one at all. They're big and unappealing to me. I'd rather take a hatch. I could drive an Escape, but I'd rather not.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 14:33 |
|
I guess I'll have to stick with the Fords that we've listed. They seem to be the only one's I'm okay with.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 15:12 |
|
I'm sure you'll want to trade up eventually. Have you SEEN your dad's car? It's awesome.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 15:18 |
|
Never seen it before. It's in the garage every day I leave for work so I have to walk past some random red coupe...YES OF COURSE I SEE IT!
But I'm being completely honest here, I'm buying a 944 that should actually be worth $5k and I'm getting it for $2900! It's in much better condition than the 911 too. Which means I've got the base for my perfect 944! Early dash, manual and these seats!
I'm gonna throw out a crazy idea here, but work with me on this: What if I got another 944/924 as a winter car? And kept the nicer one at home in the winter?
![]() 07/14/2014 at 16:04 |
|
That's exactly what you should do.
